Modern8 GALLERY. UPCOMING: The Still Life Project, mixed-media photography by Josh Winegar, who has an MFA in photography from Columbia College, Chicago, and a full time teaching position at Weber State U. The base images are found photographs originally documenting and memorializing various hunting excursions, on which the artist paints and draws, seeking "dichotomies of violence & beauty, life & death, energy & stillness, and hope & despair.'(image above) AND: Landscape oil paintings by Russ Gray, a graphic designer with a BFA from the U of U. Based on his travels to Machu Picchu in Peru and two months living in England, his paintings show the peaceful side of the city and surrounding countryside.

UMFA UP: Suitcase Paintings: Small Scale Works by Abstract Expressionists
When most people think about Abstract Impressionism they think big --- big ideas, big emotions, big action and big scale. This UMFA exhibition of about sixty works presents another side of Abstract Expressionism. These artists -- Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Joan Mitchel to name a few -- also made small-scale paintings of intense beauty that exhibit all the bravura and energy found in their larger and more acclaimed works. The body of work presented in this exhibition at the UMFA suggests two forgotten truths: first, that Abstract Expressionism works rather well in a small format, and second, many terrific artists from the period who are not well known deserve to be. Special arrangements have been made to supplement this show with a stunning black and while oil on paper, titled Triad, that Jackson Pollock painted in 1948. Through March 29. Lecture- Size, Scale and Mobility in 20th Century Art. February 06, 2008 at 1 pm in the UMFA Auditorium AND: Forgotten Splendor: Echo and Weber Canyons. This exhibition, including privately held and rarely seen photographs and promotional materials, recalls the impact of Western landscapes on the world's imagination. UMFA visitors will be able to take a virtual tour of Echo and Weber canyons in 3-D via vintage stereopticon views. Through April 13. ALSO: Susan Swartz Natural Revelations. (see page 7).

(A)PERTURE GALLERY UP: Hunger As Metaphor. The premiere of this new gallery features an installation of photos by owner/artists Anne Cummings Anderson and Heidi Gress, exploring the many manifestations of hunger. Proceeds will benefit the Utah Food Bank and help raise awareness of their programs beyond the holiday season. The gallery will be open during Gallery Stroll, after which Anderson and Gress will be "working with local artists to showcase their work on a private and public scale." Through February 15.

ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UP: Three exhibits continuing through February 22. Joe Jacoby's exhibit is in three parts: The Idea Book -- a sketchbook "attacked with exploration, freedom, & uninhibited documentation of thought:" to create large-scale paintings with a similar feel; Dreamscapes/Modern Cave Paintings -- in which ideas are represented through simple, symbolic representations to create complex narratives; Gravity Dot Series -- in which the artist applies force to material to cause a change in form: "material change reflecting a specific combination of natural processes." AND: Laurel Casjen's Touring: In a New Light, an exhibit of photographs taken with a digital camera that responds to infrared light (see page 1). ALSO: Voice, the Visual Art Institute Student Exhibit in the Park Gallery.
