PHILLIPS GALLERY UP: Colorful abstract paintings by Carolyn Coalson and minimalist sculptures by Francesc Burgos (see March edition). UPCOMING: New works by Denis Phillips. AND: Nuclear History -- Nuclear Destiny, photographs by James Lerager.|0| James Lerager has photographed all aspects of nuclear—both weapons & energy—all over the world. He brings an integrated, personal approach to the issue, with many startling, powerful stories & images to share—including photos of our own downwinders. 35 photos are accompanied by text. Setting the stage for this powerful exhibit is Trent Alvey’s neon sculpture: “Creator/ Destroyer, When Time Flows in Two Directions.” Spanning 13 feet in diameter, with eight spiraling arms resembling nuclear fuel rods, with the Moon Goddess/Creator in the center and Kali/the Destroyer at the end of each arm, the sculpture calls to mind the ultimate creative/destructive power of splitting the atom. CHARLEY HAFEN GALLERY UP: A Step Back, bromoil prints by Elise LeJeunesse.|1| Bromoil photography is a unique art form that results in a beautiful painterly quality and rich textures, thus creating a one of a kind art image. UPCOMING: A Narrow Passage: New Work by Jenevieve Hubbard.|2| Hubbard’s work typically employs unusual materials spanning from dirt, tea and india ink to her latest experimentation with embroidered silk. Her newest body of work, a collection of embroidered fingerprints and labyrinthine landscapes painted and carved into wood panel deal with the idea of human touch, the passage of time and the influence presence can have on memory and place.
UTAH CULTURAL CELEBRATION CENTER UP: Air Space, an exhibit of sixteen of North America's leading airbrush artists, putting the "pop" in pop culture. Using freehand, stencils and templates, artists use a variety of creative palettes, including steel panels, model planes, full size automobiles, miniature automobiles, snowboards, oil cans, skateboards, mannequins, cabaret tables and electric guitars.|3| Through May 5.
HOUSE GALLERY UP: Figures: Featuring the paintings of Jan Wurm |4| and Rafal Karcz.|5| This is the inaugural exhibit of House Gallery, the transformation of the cutting edge salon The Living Room into a contemporary art space in the heart of downtown Salt Lake (basement of Peery Hotel). Figures presents two contrasting techniques

SALT LAKE ART CENTER UP: Seven Deadly Sins, a rare example of a contemporary artist taking on a topic long associated with the history of Christian art. In his paintings, the sins are acted out by seagulls, which he has observed for decades along the coast of Maine (see page 7). Through May 22. AND: Launch-11: Recipients of the International Sculpture Center 2009 Student Awards, features the work of 11 emerging artists destined for national recognition. Juried by the International Sculpture Center, and never before seen in the Western United States, Launch-11 provides a glimpse into the exciting trajectory of contemporary sculpture today--and tomorrow.|6|
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE - JEWETT CENTER FOR THE ARTS UPCOMING: Mirror Images: Great Salt Lake, curated by Hikmet Sidney Loe. Celebrating the creation of Great Salt Lake Institute (GSLI) in Westminster College’s new Meldrum Science Center, the group exhibit features the work of over thirty contemporary artists working in a variety of medium as they explore the unique mirror of Great Salt Lake.|7| Contemporary artists are continually drawn to the lake to draw out its beauty as quicksilver changes in weather provide an endless array of moods and settings to capture. Each artist’s work is as varied in medium and purpose as is each experience with the lake. May 1-7,

GALLERY UAF UP: Manmade Truth, featuring Linnie Brown,|8| Liza C. Julien,|9| Mallory Qualls.|10| Linnie Brown's works in mixed media layer advertising images and insects to explore how magnifying affects the end result. Liza Julien combines her photographs with collage and mixed media to explore "cairns" or manmade rock piles found along trails and mountain tops in Utah. Mallory Qualls uses photography and cibachrome prints to create abstract paintings to answer the question “Can photography truly be abstract?” UPCOMING: Locales, images by David Fantle, Carolyn Guild and qi peng. David Fantle presents fine art landscapes and nature photography of the Western United States emphasizing uncommon locations and special light. Carolyn Guild's photographic group entitled Song of the Spirits Over the Water is inspired by the Goethe poem of the same name and shows water in its three states as art. qi peng’s ink drawings are a reflection of Williamsburg, Brooklyn from Spring 2008. Stark representations of unique buildings become a magnification of a private travel sketchbook.

UTAH ARTS ALLIANCE UP: Plastic World, an art installation by Derek Dyer featuring 100% plastic art. This show is a playful commentary on modern society where plastic has become as much a part of our lives as the food we eat and the water we drink (which also come in plastic). The exhibit features an installation where the walls, furniture and even the people are made of plastic. This plastic world is decorated in original plastic artworks that are available for sale. The Plastic world is inhabited by plastic people including the plastic family, plastic lovers, plastic enemies and of course the plastic dog. Through April 30. Opening reception April 9, 6 - 9pm.
ALPINE ART UP: Del Jou Art Exhibition, published fine art work originals on paper for home or commercial spaces. UPCOMING: The Bigger, The Better, new paintings by Tyler Bloomquist and Carlisle. Also introducing graphite artist Regina Stenberg. Music by DJ Damian Ardenne.
ART ACCESS GALLERIES UP: Landscape: Shaken Gently With a Twist, a thoughtful look at landscape by 10 diverse Utah artists working in painting, drawing, cutting edge construction, collage, quilting and digital photography. AND: Outside is In, a stimulating group exhibit of Utah outsider artists (see page 7). UPCOMING: Angels in the Architecture, curated by Namon Bills. Each of the 12 artists interpreted the theme in his or her own style. Access II presents Call of Duty, featuring artists EJ Curry (see page 6) and Carlos Perez.
UMFA UP: Africa: Arts of a Continent. Explore themes of the spirit world and afterlife with African art objects from the UMFA’s permanent collection. Through September 6, 2011. AND: Influences of the Silk Road, objects from the Museum’s permanent collection.Through April 25. AND: Pablo O'Higgins: Works on Paper, a selection of lithographs by the late Pablo O'Higgins, a Utah artist dedicated to creating heroic depictions of the working class in revolutionary Mexico. Through September 19.
ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UP: Paul Reynolds and Rod Heiss. In A Quiet Voice Is Heard, Rod Heiss' abstract sculptures in exotic wood, (see March edition) Paul Reynolds’ paintings are created with oil and graphite on wood, and extend onto and include their frames. (see March edition) Through April 9. UPCOMING: Sandy Brunvand and Coulour Maisch. Brunvand‘s interest lies with “obsessive” mark-making and incor-porating a wide variety of materials. Etchings, wood engravings, woodcuts and relief prints made from solar plates with lines made from materials such as dog hair and staples to create physical lines and textures. Maisch describes her exhibit as a combination of the sterile and organic, incorporating the textures of natural materials such as thistle, flax fibers, milkweed and more uniform structures into new configurations.

ROSE WAGNER ART CENTER UP: Thomas Aaron, a graduate of the University of Utah, displays large canvases using an abstract vocabulary to evoke the Utah landscape. |11| Through May.
MAIN LIBRARY UP: Photographic Brushstroke by Van Chu.|12| Chu is a Vietnamese artist who came to the United States in 2001. He is currently an MFA candidate majoring in Photography/Digital Imaging at the University of Utah. His photographic artworks carry the spirit of traditional Chinese painting, but combined with the use of modern technology, acrylic, water, and calligraphy ink, they depict a portrait of the artist himself as an outsider on the American shore.

MUSEUM OF CHURCH HISTORY & ART UP: The Salt Lake Tabernacle: Gathering the Saints under One Roof. MESTIZO GALLERY UP:
David Horne’s collection of new looks on the everyday toilet. A simple combination of carrying a camera and living with Crohn's disease resulted in the unusual idea to photograph toilets.
RIO GALLERY UP: In a Name, featuring over 1000 polaroids and audio clips of people who were asked what their name means to them. Visitors are invited to share their own names and stories on a group wall. This project is the work of a team of artists headed by Joseph Ostraff. Through April 28.
