PHILLIPS GALLERY UP: Lori Nelson |0| and Cordell Taylor,|1| with Teresa Flowers in the Dibble Gallery. Born in Wyoming and trained in sculpture at the U of U., Taylor is known for his abstract metal sculpture, furniture and his former ‘Cordell Taylor Gallery’. In this exhibit he focuses on the figure: simplified forms combine his impeccable fabricating ability with a keen eye for capturing the essence of the human form. Nelson, previously a Salt Lake resident who now lives in Brooklyn, paints about her neighbors' lives as interpreted through her and their windows.

GALLERY UAF UP: Images or Illusions, a collection of photographic images by Matt Glass (see page 3) and Haynes Goodsell. UPCOMING: A Holiday Show from November 20 through December , showing the work of: E Kent Eichbauer, Stephanie Swift, Patty Street, Julie Shipman, Kaye Wankier, Marian McDevitt.

SALT LAKE ART CENTER UP: Reawakened Beauty: Tillman Crane's Jordan River Photographs.  The exhibit features 30 platinum prints that document the Jordan River from its source at Utah Lake to its mouth at the Great Salt Lake (see page 7). Through January 9, 2010. UPCOMING: Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art will feature four artists whose work responds to the massive hydroelectric dam project on the Yangzi River in China.

KAYO GALLERY UP: Three of the Oyster Pirates return to Salt Lake with solo work. Featured in this exhibit are, Michael Page, who was recently featured in Hi-Fructose, Berlin artist Christian Rothenhagen, and from San Francisco, Shawn Webber. UPCOMING: I Wish Things Were Different: New works by Kenny Riches. Also collaborative video works by Kenny Riches and TJ Nelson.

ART ACCESS GALLERIES
UP: My Life by mixed media artist Marcee Blackerby. The exhibition is a journey through the poignant but always amusing life stages of the artist as she searches for identity. Access II Gallery is pleased to host photographer Amanda James' exhibit, Shadows. UPCOMING: 15th Annual Holiday Exhibition with over 20 participating artists. Access II will feature Ukrainian painter Mark Vaynshteyn and his exhibit focusing on homelessness, much of it from personal experience.

HORNE FINE ART UP: Phyllis Horne Paints Fall and Winter. Among Utah's landscape painters, Phyllis Horne is exceptional in her strength at bringing to life all four seasons of the western landscape. Although she is best known for her garden scenes, she is also a skilled painter of fall and winter scenes. Her autumn scenes blaze with color. Her winter scenes sparkle with contrasts. And all capture the cycles and poetry of trees. AND: Bright Lights, Big Cities, a new series of paintings and pastels by Karen Horne capturing the pulse of cities and energy of urban night life.|2| Through January 30.

UMFA UP: Africa: Arts of a Continent. Explore themes of the spirit world and afterlife in this ambitious installation of African art objects from the UMFA’s permanent collection (see page 5). In Africa: Arts of a Continent, you will learn about the spiritual and political power of Central African masks, the magic of ancestral African sculptures, and concepts of beauty and spirituality as seen in African objects of daily use. Through September 6, 2011.

GARFO UPCOMING: Oh So Material. Five artists -- Shawn Porter, Jared Lindsay Clark, Stephanie Leitch, John Andrews and Brenda Wattleworth -- working across a variety of media--installation, sculpture, found object, textile, and painting that explore material and its role in the finished work. Artists respond to the space itself via installation and material choices, and viewers can explore how these choices connect their separate aesthetics. The exhibition will explore material and its relationship to concept, aesthetic, and surrounding architectural space. With an outdoor courtyard installation by VAI students Cholë Hunt and George Mentchoukov. Opening Reception November 6, 2009. 7-10pm

CHARLEY HAFEN GALLERY UP: A collection of one-of-a-kind jewelry by Rabbask Designs and the vibrant and personal watercolors of Julie Ickes. UPCOMING: A joint showing of sculptural works including Juule De Haan’s carefully observed animal life sculpted with twisted wire and cut paper and Jeanine Piper TeKrony’s age-old tradition of smoke fired clay pottery pieces and animal forms.

ART AT THE MAIN UP: Sorpresa, surprising new works by J. E. Hardesty.|7| Since his featured exhibition a year ago, Hardesty has found a new abstract expressionist voice to express his passion for color and texture. UPCOMING: Holidays with Heart, original art at affordable prices. Through January 6.

UTAH ARTIST HANDS UP: Red Rock Visions. A group show featuring the Red Rock landscape paintings of John Berry, Rob Colvin, Willamarie Huelskamp, Cara Koolmees, Ron Russon, Susan Smith and Serena Supplee. UPCOMING: The latest work from Steven Sheffield, including new abstract paintings and water colors from Italy.

PATRICK MOORE GALLERY ( 2233 S 700 E; 801-484-6641) UP: UWS's fall member exhibition Inspired by a Book. The Utah Watercolor Society challenged its members to get "Inspired by a Book" for the organization's annual fall member exhibition. The results demonstrate the diversity of the artists who make up the society and the diversity of their reading interests. UPCOMING: Think Before You Ink, new works on steel by Thomas J. Howa.

ALPINE ART UP: New Works By: Lane Bennion, Erin Berrett, Scott Buckner, Lenka Kenopasek, and Derek Mellus.

SAM WELLER'S GALLERY ON THE MEZZANINE (Sam Weller's Bookstore, 254 S. Main, 328-2586) UPCOMING: Novel Pulp: New Paper Works by Amber Heaton, Lauren Huber, Jared Steffensen and David Wolske. Five artists explore the formal and conceptual themes of the dimensionality and mass of paper. Through January 8.

ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UP: 35 x 352, a juried exhibition of thirty-five Utah artists thirty-five and under (see September edition). Through November 6. UPCOMING: Heather Campbell’s mixed media / polymer clay, Carolyn Guild’s photography and Sarinda Jones’ kiln fired glass.

BEANS & BREWS UP: Alex Kravtsov, accomplished photographer who works in the most straightforward way; no models, props or staged scenes…only trusting his instincts and reacting quickly to discover the world around him. UPCOMING: Abstract, Sensoria & On Black. Artist John Harris' layered images of work blend together in stunning contemporary pieces. Also, unique ghostly sensor-exposures and striking 'crispy' on-black images.

SIGNED & NUMBERED UP: Group show with local artist taking Halloween as a theme.

PICKLE COMPANY UP: The Earth is a Secret Knot, intertwined, connected, mysterious in its shapes and languages, lovely in its dark beauties. Together, 16 writers and 16 artists explore the intersection of the written and visual, the secret knot of signification, trying to understand how we communicate and connect.

MEYER GALLERY SLC UP: Cheryl Warrick and Sushe Felix. Cheryl Warrick creates "Patchwork of Memory" paintings in mixed medium. Sushe Felix, from Denver, Colorado, has a dynamic style that is both whimsical and suprising.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGE UP: Faculty Art Show in the Jewett Center and Alumni Art Show in three locations: Giovale library, Nightingale Hall and Adamson Alumni House. Through November 24.

DIVA'S COFFEE (1560 East 3300 South) UP: Photographs by Dayle Record. Record is a photographer and painter interested in the liquid landscape. Images from the Great Salt Lake and rivers and streams of Norther Utah. Through November 30.

WILLIAMS FINE ART UP: Featuring works from Don Prys and daughter, Jodi Steen, as well as newly acquired works from Henri Moser, Stephanie Deer, Frank Huff and Randall Lake. UPCOMING: New works by Kate Starling who was featured on the cover of October's issue of Southwest Art Magazine. Also available, over 100 affordably-priced works ideal for holiday gifts

CAFE NICHE UP: Fragments, a photography exhibit by Phil Istomin. Live jazz with The Jim Guss Trio.

A GALLERY UP: Exchange, a collaborative exhibition featuring the work of Jennifer Rasmusson and Todd Robert Peterson. A special reading by Todd Robert Peterson will be held during Gallery Stroll.

CHAPMAN BRANCH LIBRARY UP: Margaret's Perspectives in Oil by Margaret Clark. Through November 10.

EVERGREEN FRAMING UP: Featuring 20 artists painting different interpretations of structures to benefit Habitat for Humanity"Structure," a show to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Utah '09: Crafts and Photography, our Statewide Annual juried competition featuring artists from across the state.

Special Event: Historic Pioneer Craft House Holiday Art Sale, November 21, 2009. The exhibit and sale will highlight Native American flutes from Bill Hughes’ woodshop (Bill donated six flutes to the 2002 Olympics opening ceremony); tote bags woven from recycled plastic bags; paintings, silver jewelry, knitted hats and mittens, rag rugs, ceramic pots and mugs, photographs, and more.
