UTAH COUNTY
Springville Museum of Art UP: 85th Annual Spring Salon, encouraging diverse applications of style and technique and promoting varied conceptual and formal directions in art. This year, the Museum received a record breaking 1,102 entries from Utah and across the country. Jurors Tom Alder, a partner at Williams Fine Art Gallery, and Jeff Lambson, Curator of Contemporary Art at the BYU Museum of Art, chose 253 works. First place was awarded to Wendy Chidester’s “Dalton on Red.” The two second place awards were given to Sunny Belliston and Laura Trinnaman. Randall Lake, Frank McEntire, and David Wayne Meikle received the three third place awards. Directors' awards were received by Aaron Brent Harker (image at left), Jared Jackson Ellis, and David Dornin. Through July 3 2009.

Brigham Young University Museum of Art UP: Dan Steinhilber, an exhibition of installations by the Washington, D.C.-based artist. The exhibition consists of nearly 20 installation works made specifically for this show from an assortment of everyday, consumer goods, such as dry cleaner hangers, trash bags, bottles of soda pop, fluorescent light bulbs, crowd control stanchions, Styrofoam packing peanuts, soy sauce packets, stacking lawn chairs, and PVC pipe (see January edition). Through June 6.

AND: Visions of the Southwest from the Diane and Sam Stewart Art Collection presents an outstanding collection of artworks by major southwestern artists and will tell some of the stories and the strategies that shaped the Stewart’s collection (see March edition). Through July 3.

ALSO: Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic, a photography exhibition of a familiar make-believe world created from buttons, dice, marbles, rubber frogs, toy robots, and other whimsical items. Forty large-scale photographs by Walter Wick, author and photographer of more than 30 children books that include the popular “I Spy” (with Jean Marzollo) and “Can You See What I See?” series, will be on display along with five models that Wick used to create some of the images, and a behind-the-scenes video presentation that will help visitors understand how Wick creates the images in his books. Through August 1.

BYU Harold B. Lee Library Exhibits UP: Whitney Hardie: Daughters of Eve, through August 6 in the Hallway Gallery, level 2.

The Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll occurs the first Friday of every month.

Covey Center for the Arts UP: Five Women and a Plethora of Photographs, features work by five friends showcasing their reflections of life: the feeling of home, the beauty of the world around them, and the small and simple things. With photographs by local and not-so-local photographers: Jenni McCall, Ashlee Malloch, Kali Jones, Paige Afton Bronson and Mica Bown, five friends who share the love of the art of photography. Jenni focuses on dance, Ashlee focuses on the beauty around her, Kali looks to home for her inspiration, Paige focuses on landscapes and Mica trains her photographic eye on people.

Terra Nova UP: Summer Glass 2009 through June 26.

ST. GEORGE AREA
St. George Art Museum UP: Highlights of 30 Years of Art Festival Acquisitions & Selections from A Century of Sanctuary: The Art of Zion National Park. For most of the years of the Art Festival, works of art were chosen from those on display to become a permanent part of the collection of the St. George Art Museum. This is a never before seen exhibit in the Main Gallery of over 70 pieces of art each by a different artist in many media both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional from the 30 years of acquisitions. Through May 30.

Rimrock Gallery UP: Springtime, a Southern Utah Watercolor Society Show. This Event is open to all water media and features local society members. Artists are invited to submit two pieces of any water media type. Dick Rose, President of the SUWS, said, “a portion of the proceeds go to the Dixie Medical foundation, which provides living facilities for patient families”. The Rimrock Gallery is located on the second floor of the Dixie Regional Medical Center at 400 E and River Road in St. George, Utah. Through June 10.
