UTAH COUNTY
Brigham Young University Museum of Art
UP: Dan Steinhilber, an exhibition of installations by the Washington, D.C.-based artist. The exhibition will consist of nearly 20 installation works made specifically for this show from an assortment of everyday, consumer goods, such as dry cleaner hangers, trash bags, bottles of soda pop, fluorescent light bulbs, crowd control stanchions, Styrofoam packing peanuts, soy sauce packets, stacking lawn chairs, and PVC pipe (see January edition). Through June 6.

AND: Visions of the Southwest from the Diane and Sam Stewart Art Collection presents an outstanding collection of artworks by major southwestern artists and will tell some of the stories and the strategies that shaped the Stewart’s collection (see March edition). Through July 3.

ALSO: Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic, a photography exhibition of a familiar make-believe world created from buttons, dice, marbles, rubber frogs, toy robots, and other whimsical items. Forty large-scale photographs by Walter Wick, author and photographer of more than 30 children books that include the popular “I Spy” (with Jean Marzollo) and “Can You See What I See?” series, will be on display along with five models that Wick used to create some of the images, and a behind-the-scenes video presentation that will help visitors understand how Wick creates the images in his books. Through August 1.

Springville Museum of Art UP: Abraham Lincoln After 200 years, includes paintings, bronzes and plaster casts depicting the 16th President of the United States on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth. Each work captures a different facet of the distinguished and historic figure, from his characteristic “philosopher stare” in his statesman years to versions of him as a young man splitting logs for fence rails. Artists such as Cyrus E. Dallin, Lorado Taft, and Avard Fairbanks are included. Through April 5.

ALSO: Redrock, Sage & Pinon, celebrating the unique and varied landscape of the west. The exhibit, which spans over 100 years, includes such artists as Maynard Dixon, John Fery and Alfred Lambourne. Featuring the raw and untamed beauty of the Wild West, each work highlights the depth and wonder of canyons and deserts unique to Utah. The exhibition is held in conjunction with the release of the new book by Museum Director, Dr. Vern G. Swanson & Dr. Donna Poulton: Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts (see page 3). Through May 3.

UPCOMING: 85th Annual Spring Salon, encouraging diverse applications of style and technique and promoting varied conceptual and formal directions in art. April 24 - July 3 2009.

Woodbury Art Museum UP: Selections. This exhibition contains selections from the Woodbury Art Museum permanent collection, long term loans, and examples of significant art works borrowed from regional and national collections. One of the main features of this exhibit is the Dale and Teresa Neibaur Collection of paintings by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt. The Museum contains over 90 works by the Hildebrandt brothers from the Neibaur collection and slowly rotates these paintings in this exhibition throughout the year.

UPCOMING: Woodbury Student Art Show, a juried exhibition featuring over 100 works in painting, drawing, 3-D, photography, and design. The show opens (with music and free refreshments) at 6pm on Friday April 3, 2009. Through May 1.

BYU Harold B. Lee Library Exhibits UP: Amazônia Photography in the Auditorium Gallery, level 1. Exhibition sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute, the Brazilian daily O Estado de S.Paulo, and the Harvard University Brazil Studies Program. Photographs by Brazilian photographers: Dida Sampaio, Jonne Roriz, José Luís Conceição and Ed Ferreira. Through April 31.

The Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll occurs the first Friday of every month. UP exhibit belows will open on March 6 from 6-9pm 2009 as part of the First Fridays Provo Gallery Stroll. The event is free and open to the public.

Pennyroyal Cafe (155 N University Ave, 341-0120) UP: Selections from the Denise Doiron and Jason Fites Metcalf private art collection. Works include paintings, drawings, and video. The Metcalfs have established themselves as prominent emerging collectors of local and regional contemporary art.

Coal Umbrella UP: New works by artist Andrew Ballsteadt.

Sego Art Center UP: Forms of Melancholy, an international new media exhibit curated by Chris Coy, a Salt Lake City based artist and curator. In conjunction with the exhibit, at 7pm on April 2, Coy will join in a discussion at Sego with the respected media arts scholar Marisa Olson. Ms. Olson is currently a contributor to Rhizome, and has curated exhibits and programs at many institutions.

AND: In the Annex, the photographs of local artist Annie Watkins. Watkins has developed a characteristic style of composition and color in work that captures the charm of kitsch pop culture.

Covey Center for the Arts UP: Tactile Song: Work by Aaron Fritz and Brittany Golden. .

Caleb Mitchell Photography (250 N University Ave, 734-9395) UP: New Photographs by Travis Lovell and Brandon Allen.

Legion (167 N University Ave, 718-3038) UP: Street Art by local talent.

Painted Temple | Low Brow? No How! (47 W 300 N, 356-8282) UP: Art Fusion. A group collaborative exhibition by six artists. Six canvases will be hung on the walls of the Painted Temple. In an exquisite-corpse, surrealist type game, the artists will each draw on one canvas for approximately five minutes. They will then shift paintings, adding to the artist who has drawn on the canvas previously.

Mode Boutique UP: New drawings by St. Louis/ Utah artist Colin Tuis Nesbit.

Terra Nova UP: Brian Kershisnik: Paper Work, through April 24.

Utah County Gallery (151 S University Ave; 785-2059) UP: New works from the Utah Valley Artists Guild, including works on paper and painting media.

Storefront Galleries (250 W Center, 273 W Center; 377-5700) UP: Significant Forms, a group exhibit from the Brigham Young University Visual Arts Club.

Window Box Gallery (62 W Center St, 377-4367) UP: Featuring new work by James Christensen, Emily McPhie, Cassandra Barney, and others.

The Gallery at Cats Cradle (168 W Center, 374-1832) UP: A show of 18th and 19th century Santos Figures from churches and personal altars- Also, prints by prominent local and international artists including a print by Alex Katz.

SANPETE COUNTY
Central Utah Art Center UP: Utah Ties, the CUAC annual juried exhibition. Juror is Moti Hasson from the Moti Hasson Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Through April 7 (see page 1).

UPCOMING: Short Stories: Sanpete County an exhibition of collaborative work by Paul Adams, Joe Ostraff, & John Telford. This is an installation of photographs documenting locations and/or objects found in Sanpete County. Each photo serves as evidence that something has taken place with the intent to uncover the story(ies) behind the occurrence. Each site was photographed in the round on the eight points of the compass and compiled to create a sequential effect that moves the viewer around the subject. April 10 - May 6th, Opening Reception Friday, April 10, 6-8pm. AND: Sanpete Portrait, an art education project by North and South Sanpete school district elementary students.

MOAB
Moab Art Works UPCOMING: "I'll Be Ahead If I Can Quit While I'm Behind" photographs by Brian Parkin opens April 11th 6-9pm. This is the twenty fourth and final exhibition at the gallery, which will become Moab Art Works Studio, the most complete provider of photographic services in Southeastern Utah.

Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery UP: Senior BFA Portfolio Show, featuring the work of the twenty BFA art and design seniors, categorized into five mediums: photography, illustration, ceramics, graphic design and printmaking/painting/drawing. April 2- May 2.

South Hall Gallery (SUU College of Performaing and Visual Arts UP: Excerpts from Brian Hoover's Advanced Oil Painting class. These several paintings are categorized into four different themes: collage painting, psychological self portrait, nonstandard paint application and landscapes. Through April 22.

Dixie State College Art Department Showcase, an annual exhibition showcasing work of the finest students as well as work by alumni and faculty. St. George Art Museum UP: Highlights of 30 Years of Art Festival Acquisitions & Selections from A Century of Sanctuary: The Art of Zion National Park. For most of the years of the Art Festival, works of art were chosen from those on display to become a permanent part of the collection of the St. George Art Museum. This is a never before seen exhibit in the Main Gallery of over 70 pieces of art each by a different artist in many media both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional from the 30 years of acquisitions. Through May 30.
