ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UPCOMING: Three new exhibits opening January 11 and continuing through February 22.
Joe Jacoby |0| compares his artistic process to watering a plant. "I allow my artwork to have its own life, rather than attempting to control its growth. I relinquish control to greater forces --imagination and nature -- both of which we try to control and limit as a human society." Jacoby's exhibit will be in three parts: The Idea Book -- a sketchbook that serves as the artist's most expressive form. "It is attacked with exploration, freedom, & uninhibited documentation of thought," with the goal of creating large-scale paintings with a similar feel; Dreamscapes/Modern Cave Paintings -- in which ideas are represented through simple, symbolic representations to create complex narratives; and Gravity Dot Series -- in which the artist applies force to material to cause a change in form. "I set up experiments, or artistic events that are similar to a geological event: material change reflecting a specific combination of natural processes."
Laurel Casjen's Touring: In a New Light, an exhibit of photographs taken with a digital infared camera.|1| In addition to the light seen by the eye, the camera responds to infared light, capturing as light longer wavelengths given off by plants, animals, and the sun, which we feel as heat. The camera records a monochrome world, but with the help of Photoshop, Casjens reintroduces subtle color. Casjens says, "Travel draws us to new and exciting locations: when we go we see new things, new people, new cultures, and new styles. These photographs display the novel places I see, and the other people who are there as well. People and Place are intertwined." (our February edition will feature an article on Laurel Casjen's exhibit).
Voice the Visual Art Institute Student Exhibit in the Park Gallery. This exhibition, created by students age 5 to 18, comes from a collection of "Imagination Drawings" that the students make at the beginning of each class without a prescribed theme. After weeks of this practice the students were given the opportunity to take one drawing and develop it further.|2|

When studying and photographing the wild herds of horses here in Utah, it has been exciting to observe the good and positive aspects of the social structure." Public reception, Saturday, January 19, 4:00-5:30 pm. Through March 1.
Modern8 GALLERY. UP: Industrial Landscapes photo/graphic interpretations by qi peng and a 30-year collection of old sign photography by Randall Smith. "Graphic designers are inherently drawn to environmental typography because they work with type all day long. In the environment though, type often takes on three-dimensional characteristics." Through January 11th.
ADDICTED CAFE (511 West 200 South, [801] 532-1453): UPCOMING: Qi Peng's series entitled Monochromes will feature the artists's first paintings, done in 2004 in Philadelphia, comparing them with the experimental minimalism of his colorless monochrome abstractions. The larger scale of this work will be featured for the first time in these lyrical and poetic works which have pure texture "without" any "color."

UMFA UPCOMING: Susan Swartz Natural Revelations. For over 40 years Susan Swartz has examined the diverse forms and metaphysical riches of nature. Approximately 20 of Swartz's large-scale paintings and some smaller images fill UMFA's Great Hall. |4| Various groupings--landscapes, trees, water scenes and water lilies--exemplify Swartz's response to the natural world. Opens January 11th after an artist talk and book signing on January 7th from 11:30-1:00. Through April 13th. (our February edition will feature an article on the Swartz exhibit).
Suitcase Paintings: Small Scale Work by Abstract Expressionists
When most people think about Abstract Impressionism they think big --- big ideas, big emotions, big action and big scale. This UMFA exhibition of about sixty works presents another side of Abstract Expressionism. These artists -- Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Joan Mitchel to name a few -- also made small-scale paintings of intense beauty that exhibit all the bravura and energy found in their larger and more acclaimed works. The body of work presented in this exhibition at the UMFA suggests two forgotten truths: first, that Abstract Expressionism works rather well in a small format, and second, many terrific artists from the period who are not well known deserve to be.
Special arrangements have been made to supplement this show with a stunning black and while oil on paper, titled Triad, that Jackson Pollock painted in 1948. Through March 29
Lecture- Size, Scale and Mobility in 20th Century Art. February 06, 2008 at 1 pm in the UMFA Auditorium
Forgotten Splendor: Echo and Weber Canyons Opening January 25, this exhibition, including privately held and rarely seen photographs and promotional materials, recalls the impact of Western landscapes on the world's imagination. These two canyons were celebrated by Sir Richard Burton and, through post cards, posters, and the works of celebrated photographers, became for a time the popular image of the West. UMFA visitors will also be able to take a virtual tour of Echo and Weber canyhons in 3-D, via vintage stereopticon views.
Through April 13.
PHILLIPS GALLERY UP: Holiday Group Show. Through January 11. UPCOMING: Joe Carter |5| & Lindsay Frei.|6| For a recent review of Lindsay Frei's work see our April 2007 edition. Through February 8.

AND: Masters of West Coast Assemblage and Collage This exhibition honors five American artists who are now considered the innovators of the 1960's-1980's artistic expression of assemblage. Through January 26.
ALSO: David Kimball Anderson: To Morris Graves Santa Cruz, California based sculptor David Kimball Anderson pays tribute to the Pacific Northwest painter Morris Graves with an installation of bronze and steel vases (all created in 2007) that mimic the forms in Graves' series of flower painting. Through February 2.
ART ACCESS GALLERIES UPCOMING: Gifts, a thought-provoking exhibit of auto-biographical paintings of Alice Perreault, focusing on her life since she was injured and her son disabled during his birth. Filled with angst, but also with hope, her large canvases reflect the gifts and emotional costs of living with such damage, and transfer both (as a gift) to all who experience her art. Through February 8.
AND: Bagging Birds. Graphic artist and U of U arts professor Carol Sogard struggles with the moral implications of her career and theorizes that because brand promotion is an integral part of the graphic arts, designers may be responsible for over-consumption and a declining ecosystem.
Her installation of 130 plastic bagged birds focuses on the environmental impact of our plastic trash, encouraging consumers to think about their habits of consumption.
Through February 8.
SUGAR SPACE is a multidisciplinary art center in Sugarhouse that produces and presents innovative dance, theater, and visual arts while creating programs that support the development of the next generation of creators and independent thinkers. They offer performances, workshops, discussions, classes, and rental spaces.
This month they are also exhibiting the paintings and multi-media collages of Kimo Pokini, whose works combine the abstract magic of microscopic views with a synthetic reconstruction of nature.
