Paul Heath's Studio by Steve Coray
Paul Heath's studio is in his home. No, Heath's home IS his studio. He does much of his painting on the floor of his living room. That room also hosts racks and racks of paint tubes, brushes, reference materials and other art materials. Artwork adorns the walls, sits on tables, and is tucked into cluttered stacks in every room. In his kitchen, instead of a dining table, there is a table saw for his cutout shapes, with various works-in-progress scattered around it on the floor. He has turned his sun room into his pottery workshop. Paul Heath is truly immersed in his art.

Feature: On the Spot
 Doug Braithwaite
 |
| Doug Braithwaite is known around the state for his plein-air landscape paintings, which have won numerous awards (see page 6). Brandon Cook reviewed the artist's recent exhibition at the Eccles Community Art Center in Ogden for our June edition. |
What hangs above your mantel?
I have a 1986 etching called "Chripalis : Sundance" by B. Haddock above my mantel.
What is your favorite building in Utah?
My favorite building in Utah is a little cabin in Teasdale that Cathy Bagley of Torrey Gallery lets me stay in once in a while on painting trips.
What is the most memorable exhibit you've seen recently?
I just saw an exhibit at the Laguna Art Museum that featured paintings by Colin Campbell Cooper. There were lots of paintings that he did from all over the world. I knew some of the work from books but came away from the show feeling like I had just met the artist.

Artists of Utah tour of the Zions Bank Collection
Because our recent Spring Fundraiser was our most successful to date, we would like to thank all of our contributors (financial and editorial) by inviting them to join us for a special tour of the Zions Bank art collection located in their downtown headquarters on the corner of South Temple and Main. All contributors, from 2007 and past years, including writers and photographers, are welcome to join us Wednesday July 18th for this special event.
We will be meeting in the 10th floor lobby at 12:30pm. Tom Alder, Vice President of Zions Private Mortgage Banking, a recent MA graduate of the University of Utah's Art History program and the author of a regular 15 Bytes feature, Alder's Accounts, will provide a guided tour of the Bank's collection, spread throughout the building. Light refreshments and entertaining anecdotes will be provided. Following the tour of the Bank's collection members of the tour are invited to join Alder and other 15 Bytes staff members as they take a tour of the Deseret News Color of the Land exhibit at the Museum of Utah Art and History. The MUAH is located around the corner from Zions Bank.
Please RSVP at webmaster@artistsofutah.org if you plan to attend.
August Edition
We will publish a very limited August edition on Wednesday August 1st. The edition will include our regular exhibition listings but will not contain features or articles. |

15 Bytes: About Us
This Edition
Tom Alder is a banker by day but in his free time explores his interest in Utah art. He is on the board of the Museum of Utah Art and History, organizes the yearly Zion's Bank Art Show, and is currently working on a Masters Thesis on Henri Moser.
Ed Bateman, a Salt Lake artist, received his MFA from the University of Utah and teaches there in the Arts Technology program. His biggest surprise of late is the discovery that the tools that he thought would direct his thinking to the future have led him to contemplate the art of the past.
Kasey Boone is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has been living in Utah since 1990. He has a BA in French and Cultural Studies. He is a self-described "orphaned post-modernist."
Ehren Clark received his BA in Modern and Contemporary Art History and Critcism at the University of Utah and an MA in the art of the Renaissance at the University of Reading, UK. He currently writes for the Deseret News, as well as being published in other journals in Utah.
Steve Coray has a background in photojournalism and now runs his own business providing creative, affordable event and portrait photography to clients all along the Wasatch Front and beyond.
Sheryl Gillilan received her B.A. in Psychology from Lewis and Clark College, and Masters in both Social Services and Law and Social Policy from Bryn Mawr College. She is an award-winning quilt artist and the Finance & Special Projects Manager for Art Access.
Sue Martin holds an M.A. in Theatre and has worked in public relations. As an artist, she works in watercolor, oil, and acrylic to capture Utah landscapes or the beauty of everyday objects in still life.
Frank McEntire, a native of Houston, TX is a sculptor whose works have been featured in several publications and shown in numerous exhibits throughout Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. He is well known as an independent curator and writer and served as the executive director of the Utah Arts Council from 2003-2005.
Geoff Wichert is a professor of Art History at Snow College, as well as a glass and multi-media artist. He has been writing about art for over 25 years in regional, national and international publications.
