Exhibition Spotlight: Springville
Five Noted Utah Artists Exhibit at Springville Museum of Art

The Springville Museum of Art's People, Places and Things, which highlights the work of Marilee B. Campbell |1|, Lou Jene Carter |2|, Carol Pettit Harding |3|, Carol Dunford Jackman |4|, and MaryAnn Free Smith |0|, is an exhibition of five women artists, friends and colleagues who, despite their different media and styles, share common interests as well as each other's company in an effort "not to paint in a vacuum."

In September of this year the artists attended the opening of Burton Silverman exhibition at Brigham Young University's MoA. In response to a question, Silverman summed up his belief that artists need association with other artists and other artwork by saying, "You can't paint in a vacuum" -- a statement that resonated with these five artists who share views about art, encourage each others work and share similar struggles. On occasion the artists meet together for lunch, usually at Campbell's house, where they discuss both their art and the daily requirement of living and family. At one of these recent meetings, the group slightly altered Silverman's statement to express another aspect of their lives as artists: "You can't paint and vacuum."

Each of the five artists has done their fair share of vacuuming as well as face more serious family and household duties. With their combined 300 years of experience, they have faced the difficulties of children with the serious health concerns like cancer, seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and childhood diabetes, as well as the care of ill parents, spouses and grandchildren. As Campbell remarks, "We can only go into our studio when there isn't a current crisis."

When they do go to the studio, each artist uses her chosen media to express a unique vision; certain traits do bring them together: a compulsion to make art, the influence of the human exerience of living in the Mountain West, and optimistic and biographical elements in their work.

The artists also share a common interest and identification with art from an early age. When Carter was a child her parents introduced her as an artist. Harding was only ten when she sold her first painting to her uncle. Free Smith's parents encouraged her at an early age, Jackman made paper dolls for her kindergarten friends and Campbell lived with the influence of her grandfather, George Beard, a noted Utah artist.

All have all had formal art training as well as classes from top artists across the nation. They have exhibited in important shows and venues from the East Coast to the West Coast and have won many awards.

UPCOMING: Memories of the 1980s will come back to viewers who see John Schaefer’s photographs in Moab Art Works latest exhibit, The BIG Picture Show, which opens on Friday January 12th. Schaefer attended the Democratic and Republican Presidential Conventions of 1984 and documented them using 35mm Polaroid transparency film. Later he made prints using the super-large Polaroid camera at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. John Schaefer grew up in New York and now lives in Salt Lake City. He is the director and co-founder of the Children’s Media Workshop and is particularly interested in how mass media is integrated into people’s lives. He has photographed the Sundance Film Festival for the past 25 years and is a regular presenter at the Moab Photo Symposium and will be making a return appearance at this year’s event in May.

"I am excited to get the opportunity to show these photographs to a local audience" said Brian Parkin of Moab Art Works. "Schaefer’s images draw the viewers’ attention to the iconography used by both major political parties. To see the pictures after twenty years with the knowledge of all that has happened since then in the country and the wider world is most interesting."
