Hints & Tips: For Artists
Sample Publicaton Guidelines

Daniel Smith is looking for submissions from artists who wish to share step-by-step information about their techniques. Articles may appear in catalogues, flyers, or web site.
Length: 900-1000 words, submitted double-spaced hard copy
Include: biographical information, at least 8 slides with captions, and step-by-step description
Payment: $200 - $400 if article is accepted

American Style is interested in purchasing well-research articles on themes in contemporary craft art; profiles of American collectors; arts tours of American cities or regions; major craft fairs or events; established craft artists and their work, etc.
Length: 1000-2000 words (average)
Include: Clear, specific, concise outline of the topic, explaining why it would be of interest to American Style readers, and why you have to background or experience to write about it. Identify your sources of information; projected length of article, types of interviews, etc.
Lead time: 6-12 months from receipt of article to date of publication

Watercolor Magic is open to feature articles, columns, and short essays. Features usually focus on teaching a watermedia technique, along with a step-by-step demonstration. Columns include “The Working Artist,” which focuses on the business and marketing of art.
Length: 4-6 pages (for a feature)
Include: What you are interested in writing about and why it would appeal to readers; your qualifications/background for writing this article; education/instruction and awards. Also include at least eight samples of your work in slide format. Further guidelines are provided if your article proposal is accepted.

Art Calendar seeks articles on the business of art – from the artist’s point of view – including self-promotion, exhibition advice, working with galleries, art law, etc. They are also interested in features on artists making a difference in the community, and profiles of successful artists, written in a practical, can-do, uplifting tone.
Length: none specified
Include: If you are a first-time contributor, send an entire article rather than a proposal; or you may send a reprint of an article you’ve had published elsewhere, along with a proposal for a new article you’d like to write and submit.
