THE PICKLE COMPANY UPCOMING: The Art of Consumption, a solo exhibition exploring modern consumer culture by Rodolfo Juarez, December 7 -- January 19, 2008. "As a society, we have allowed human beings to be reduced to nothing more than a bar code, an impersonal generic label for the purpose of economic calculation," the artist says. "As consumers, we no longer deal with people who cry and bleed and suffer. Instead, we deal with simplistic labels that have become their political and social representation."
RIO GALLERY UPCOMING:2007 Individual Artist Showcase, highlighting the work of nineteen artists including Lily Havey, Chadwick Tolley, Amy Jorgensen, Corey Strange, Trevor Bazil, K. Stevenson, Suzanne Kanatsiz, and Eileen Doktorski. The exhibited artwork draws from the fields of literature, dance, music, media and/or visual arts. The artists were awarded a grant through the Utah Arts Council Artist Endowment Fund for their individual participation in the arts and professional development. Grants ranged in size from $500 to $2000. Award decisions were made from a pool of over 80 applicants on the basis of project, experience, and artistic merit by panels composed of specialists in each genre.
SALTGRASS PRINTMAKERS UPCOMING: Quaternary, the Fourth Annual Fundraiser Print Exchange Show. Prints by Todd Anderson, Ed Bateman, Joey Behrens, Erik Brunvand, Sandy Brunvand, Al Denyer, Justin Diggle, Stefanie Dykes, Michael Gaffney, Matty Kleinberg, Zane Lancaster, Joe Ostraff, Marnie Powers-Torrey, Kathy Puzey, Chad Tolley, Mary Toscano, Erik Waterkotte, Cein Watson, Sam Wilson, Koichi Yamamoto. All prints are $100 at the opening reception, Saturday, Dec 8, 6-9 pm.
ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UP: Paintings by Josanne Glass and Maureen O'Hara Ure. Glass depicts people based on black and white photographs that she has “re-interpreted.” Maureen O’Hara Ure's paintings draw on pre-Renaissance sources to connect the anxieties of earlier times and our own fears. Through December 28.
AND: In the Park Gallery, the Annual Holiday Craft Exhibit & Sale once again transforms the Park Gallery at the Art Barn with a profusion of colors, textures, materials and images. Through December 16.
SALT LAKE ART CENTER UP: Three exhibits out of the west coast. SF Recycled features work from a unique artist-in-residence program at a solid waste transfer and recycling center in San Francisco. (see page 1) AND: Masters of West Coast Assemblage and Collage This exhibition honors five American artists who are now considered the innovators of the 1960's-1980's artistic expression of assemblage. Through January 26. (see November edition). ALSO: David Kimball Anderson: To Morris Graves Santa Cruz, California based sculptor David Kimball Anderson pays tribute to the Pacific Northwest painter Morris Graves with an installation of bronze and steel vases (all created in 2007) that mimic the forms in Graves' series of flower painting. Through February 2.
ART AT THE MAIN UP: For the Love of Red, bold watercolors by Joy Nunn. Nunn says that she is pleased with the results of the barely year old non-profit artists’ co-operative which she helped found a year ago. The gallery offers emerging artists, such as herself, to show their works in the award-winning venue that is the Salt Lake City Main Library.
MODERN8 GALLERY. UP: Industrial Landscapes photo/graphic interpretations by qi peng and a 30-year collection of old sign photography by Randall Smith. "Graphic designers are inherently drawn to environmental typography because they work with type all day long. In the environment though, type often takes on three-dimensional characteristics, adding a extra dimension to the more typical designer's 2-D world." Through January 11th.
QI PENG EVENTS Multimedia artist Qi Peng will be the subject of simultaneous exhibitions at IAO Gallery, model citizen (247 E. Broadway,

A native New Yorker who now lives in Salt Lake, Qi Peng's uses unorthodox materials to comment, often satirically, on political and philosophical issues. "Combining the elegance of a classical music with the
sensibility of a punk rock star, qi peng sees art as a commercial
product to be executed by any means possible.

UMFA UP:Andy Warhol's Dream America through January 6, 2008. 88 screenprints from the collection of the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, including some of the late artist's most popular "suites": the Maos, Marilyn Monroes, Campbell's Soup, Mick Jaggers, Ten Jews, and Cowboys & Indians. Also the John F. Kennedy Campaign Poster from the Flash portfolio, Jackie I and Jackie II, and several revealing self-portraits.

ART ACCESS GALLERIES UP: 13th Annual Holiday Exhibition featuring the diverse works of 19 talented Utah artists. Art Access II Gallery presents new works of colored pencil artist Holly Williams. Both through December 19.
PIONEER PRECINCT BUILDING COMMUNITY ART GALLERY UP: The Salt Lake City Arts Council, in cooperation with the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Sorenson Multicultural Center, announces a new collection of children’s art by the Computer Clubhouse on exhibit in the Community Gallery in the Pioneer Precinct Building, located at 1040 West 700 South. The artwork is taken from t-shirts and tote bags the Clubhouse artists created during the summer program and the exhibit includes photographs of the artists with their creations. HORNE FINE ART UP: Night & Day, a show exploring the contrast between darkness and daylight. Also dramatic new fall and winter landscapes by Ken Baxter and Phyllis Horne in a range of sizes from petite to grand. Through December 22.
LOGE GALLERY (Mezzanine level of the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre) UP: Four Sight, an exhibit of paintings by Laurel Hart, Candace Rideout, Debra Russell and Sheryl Thornton, during the run of the play The Foreigner, December 7 - December 22.

GALLERY AT LIBRARY SQUARE UP: Invisible No More: Utah Latino Dignity March. On April 9, 2006, more than 43,000 people marched peacefully from the City and County Building to the Utah State Capitol to support a more humanitarian approach to immigration. This bilingual photo-documentary captures the event with photographs and other documents. Through December 18.

KEN SANDERS RARE BOOKS UPCOMING: Calendar Publication Party and Signing featuring the models of Trent Call's Twelve Rounds: Pin-up vs. Landscape December 7th at 7 pm. A calendar of twelve month of gorgeous pin-ups and Utah landscape come to life as the models featured in the paintings (most of whom are Salt Lake locals) will step right from the canvases and into Ken Sanders to sign calendars. Each of the 100 limited-edition 2008 calendars features full-color reproductions of all thirteen of the paintings from Call's Twelve Rounds: Pin-up vs. Landscape exhibition (currently featured in the downtown gallery/bookstore) and is signed by the artist.
