15 Bytes Supporters Visit the Zions Bank Art Collection
On July 18th, Tom Alder, Vice President of Zions Bank Private Mortgage Banking, played host to over twenty-five artists, art lovers and art professionals at the Zions Bank headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City. Alder, who writes a regular feature for 15 Bytes, invited contributors to the ezine to join him for a casual walking tour of the bank's art collection, spread throughout the building. The group was able to admire the collection of early and contemporary Utah art, including art in private offices and the bank's Board Room. Afterwards, the group perused the new collection of Utah landscapes by Frank Huff now hanging in the building's main floor branch; they then continued down South Temple to the Museum of Utah Art and History where the Museum's executive director, Kandace Steadman, offered light refreshments and a chance to see the Deseret News landscape show.
As the group made its way from the third to second floor of the Zions building, Jo-Ann Wong, a visual artist and member of the Salt Lake City Arts Council, herded all but a few stragglers onto the stairs for a group portrait (see above). Wong's smiling face and digital camera are well-known to the Salt Lake City art community. For a selection of her snapshots at art events from the past year, see page 2.
The response to this tour was so successful that we are now busy planning future visits to private and public collections and exhibitions throughout Utah. You'll hear more in these pages in the following months.
Best of all, the tour was a chance for members of the community to mingle with each other and meet some of our 15 Bytes writers, a number of whom were on hand. These writers, as well as our photographers, will be meeting for a brainstorming session on Monday, August 6th. If you're interested in joining this group, go to page 2 for more details.

Exhibitions in Utah
Plenty of Festivals and Exhibitions to End the Summer As you'll see from this edition the 15 Bytes Staff likes to take a vacation in August. But many others in the visual arts community are still hard at work in the month of August, with a regular round of exhibitions, from Brigham City to St. George, and some great art festivals for those of you taking your vacation close to home.
This weekend provides a number of opportunities to enjoy the summer weather and see some art. Galleries in Provo, Ogden, Park City and Salt Lake all have openings this weekend. The biggest event, however, is the the Park City Arts Festival, August 4th and 5th. The Park City Gallery scene has been somewhat dormant the past couple of months but will be putting on some great shows this month in conjunction with the festival. For more on this and other exhibitions in the north, go to page 4. And later this month in the month, Ogden Valley hosts the 2nd Annual Balloon Festival and plein air competition August 18th.
Spring City hosts its own plein air competition at the end of August. This small town in Sanpete valley has always been known as a haven for the visual arts, but the recent creation of the Spring City Arts Council has meant even more activity for patrons and artists alike. They are hosting a plein air competition, arts festival and artist studio tour, where you'll have the chance to visit the studios of close to 40 working artists. For more on this and other events and exhibitis in the southern half of the state go to page 5.
Of course there is plenty happening in Salt Lake City as well. You'll find a complete listing of the exhibitions in the area on page 3.
:: please note: Our August 15 Bytes is a mini-edition due to our vacation. We will be back in September with a full 10-page edition.
