Up & Upcoming: Salt Lake Area Galleries
What's Up and Upcoming This Month Compiled by 15 Bytes Staff. Unless otherwise noted, UPCOMING shows begin November Gallery Stroll, November 17th, 6 to 9 pm.
THE PICKLE COMPANY UPCOMING: With two installations going up this month, the Pickle Company introduces its new Visual Artist-in-Residence program and the first of a series of six exhibitions by guest curator Kenny Riches.
AERIAL, an installation by brothers David and Mathieu Ruhlman opens Thursday, November 16th with a special live sound performance and the installation will be on view through December 10th. Mathieu Ruhlman is a sound and video artist living in Vancouver, B.C. He has released numerous recordings on various U.S., Canadian, and European Record labels, and has performed radio works for programs around the world. His brother, David, is a self-taught artist based in Salt Lake, whose paintings and mixed-media works have been exhibited at numerous galleries in Utah. Working with found objects, photographs, sound, video, and sculpture, the Ruhlman brothers provide an intimate look into possession and loss, separation and transcendence.|0| This installation reveals a narrative centering around an individual's attempts to connect to his lost family. Using the possessions his family has left behind, the installation's protagonist obsessively tries to build a receptor --an aerial -- through which he can communicate across the barrier of death. Drawing from the fringes of science and mysticism, the Ruhlman brothers create an interactive world of failed (and successful?) experiments to explore the relations between the living and the dead and objects and their possessors.
ALSO: Kenny Riches, owner of the recently closed Kayo Gallery, guest curates at the Pickle Coompany with a collaborative installation by Jenni Lord, Allison Baar, Sherri Paulie and Möey Nelson entitled We are Woven.|1| This installation presents four artists at the threshold of womanhood, unearthing childhood scars, regaining strength in softness, and uncovering new identities. The mixed-media installation reveals a coming-of-age reconnection to hidden threads of sisterhood and humanity.a deeply personal look into beauty, nostalgia, and self-discovery. Opening reception will be held during the November Gallery Stroll, November 17th, 6 to 9 pm.
SALT LAKE ART CENTER UP: Robert Taplin: Five Outer Plants, October 21, 2006 - January 27, 2007 in the Main Gallery. The Five Outer Planets is an installation in which the Planets are envisioned as massive, internally illuminated figures suspended in a darkened gallery space(see article page 1). ALSO: In the Project Gallery, David Baddley: Peace Garden October 21, 2006 - December 30, 2006. Salt Lake City photographer David Baddley has recorded the International Peace Garden, located in Jordan Park along the banks of the Jordan River. Baddley's black and white prints chronicle the sculptural and architectural installations in the gardens, and reveal the natural decay, and human abuse of the objects that seems oddly counter to the optimistic intent of the participating nations, and their wishes for world peace. AND: Unseen Shores:The Post-Vietnam Era from U.S. Navy Collection. This exhibition fills a void in the now 'traditional' contemporary art world that typically favors artwork from a freethinking perspective and with theoretical significance. Twenty-eight contemporary artworks by thirteen artists celebrate both the patriotism and the scars of those who serve in the United States armed forces.|2|

This is the first major exhibition of his work in two years and the artist says "For the most part, I've taken a little rest from the political/social commentary of my past work to explore the beauty and newness that can be overwhelming with travel. Kershisnik is a professional artist whose reputation keeps growing nationally. Adamson, his neighbor and friend, has Down syndrome. They started working collaboratively on art in Kershisnik's studio in rural Kanosh in 1995. Kershisnik, charmed by the results of his experience with Adams, searched for a venue to show the unique collaborative work and approached Art Access, which committed to showing new Brian & Joe work every two years. Each of these artists brings something to the collaboration that the other does not have and will never have. It takes the contributions of both artists to make this charming art, which values each artist for whom they are. The Brian & Joe art deals with subject matter which is currently important to Adams. He has left Touched by an Angel inspired images behind and this year is considering subject matter closer to home, such as trees, Coca Cola and tomatoes. Willamarie Huelskamp's paintings represent people in her life, whether they are about her family of origin or her current family and family of friends. Huelskamp has developed her own style of layered, textured, water-based painting with stylized, almost cartoon-like figures that remind one of paintings by Marc Chagall. Self-taught sculptor Jim Rennert's most recent work is a series of sculptures focusing on the competitive nature of business. He sculpts and casts all his work in his home studio. I am often inspired by presentations of contemporary life found in movies and commercial art."
