UPCOMING: Material Culture:The Fine Art of Textile opens June 23rd. ALSO: Looking Back: 75 Years of the Salt Lake Art Center June 23rd through October 14th in the upstairs gallery. The Salt Lake Art Center was founded in 1931 as the Art Barn, and opened in its first home in Reservoir Park across from the U of U campus in 1933. This exhibition is small, but celebrates the 75 years of its existence, there and in its downtown location. The 24 artists included in the show have been important and influential over much of the seventy-five year life of the Salt Lake Art Center, as well as in the broader arena of Utah’s cultural community. Many taught at the Art Barn or the Art Center, some were students there, or speak of having been influenced in their artistic growth by exhibitions or other events. Most have had solo exhibitions there more than once, and all of them, to some degree, have considered the Art Barn and the Art Center their artistic “home.” Curated by Allen Dodworth, director of the Center from 1976 to 1981, artists include Lee Deffebach, Gordon Cope |0|, Richard Johnston, Earl Jones, Don Olsen, Doug Snow, LeConte Stewart, Anna Campbell Bliss.
PATRICK MOORE GALLERY UP: The New American West, paintings by Mark Knudsen of the badlands of Utah. Knudsen enjoys depicting the gray and ochre sand hills and buttes of the area around San Rafael Swell (as well as some other scenes, including Antelope Island). |1| His design and paint application remains true to the stark dry landscape that inspires him. These very long horizontal paintings are executed on hardboard. The exhibit includes some smaller works, very affordable works on paper and a new body of abstract paintings on paper. ALSO: In the red gallery, abstract expressionist paintings by Cary Griffiths. |2| Griffiths employs abstract expressionist technique (most notably the drip style of Jackson Pollock) in works of starck contrast using mostly unmixed hues blue, red, black white and gold. UPCOMING: Glass Art Guild of Utah Annual exhibition features works from over thirty Utah artists working in glass.
KAYO GALLERY UP: down to this featuring work from emerging artists Nathan Craven, Cameron Major and Cory Oberndorfer |3|. These artists are three recent graduates of Weber State University. Forming a show of cultural eye candy, Craven, Cameron and Oberndorfer gear their work towards conveying ideas of human interaction, social status and personal identities while breaking down cultural taboos. Whether it’s religion, pop iconography or the use of alcohol as social lubricant, the shared conceptual interests of these emerging artists help mold three solid bodies of work. UPCOMING: Invisible Coterie featuring work by Camilla Taylor.
WASATCH FRAME SHOP UP: Sotto Voce photographs by Brandon Allen thru August 17th |4|. Allen's use of the Italian word for "whisper" in his exhibition title reflects the artist's current body of work. As he says, "The images have a certain air about them: they’re not deep; they don’t persuade the viewer toward some socio-ethical cause. They don’t try to reveal the inner man, or conclude the mysteries of love and hate. They’re not even the complex expressions of a frustrated artist. In fact, they’re quite the opposite; they’re still." Allen uses the time honored silver print method for his images which depict quiet landscapes and object of decay.
ROSE WAGNER ART GALLERY UP: Celebrating the Freedom of the Soul and the Spirit, mixed media works by Marah Brown Rohovit through June 30th. Born in Kansas in 1942, Marah Brown Rohovit moved to Utah in 1972 where she continued working in painting and ceramics. In the early 1980’s she returned to painting full time and expanded her mediums from oil and acrylic to also include watercolor, pastel, oil pastel and charcoal. It was at the time that she began working on paper, which combined with the new mediums, allowed her a more spontaneous and fluid approach to her work. More recently she has expanded her mixed media approach to include drawing on paper and applying those drawings and other items to her canvases.

MODERN8 GALLERY UP: James Shuman and Ben Howell thru June 14th. Even as a young child James Shuman enjoyed using a wide variety of art materials, from colored pencils to acrylic & metallic paint. As time has passed, Shuman’s work has become larger and his focus more precise. “At times I enjoy being visually spontaneous; at other times my creative process is extremely methodical,” says Shuman. “I am interested in the revelation of the mysterious. Art is unlimited and my goal is to leave behind artifacts that touch upon my time spent on earth. Art is a process that is ever changing. It is a journey in which the ending isn’t revealed. It contains a great deal of mystery, much like life itself.”

The artist first experienced woodcuts when she was a high school student. She explains her love of the medium, "The process is painstaking and there are no short cuts. After making detailed color sketches, selecting block size, planning the sequence of color printing and preparing the first block, the real work begins.
