Up & Upcoming: Salt Lake Area Galleries
What's Up and Upcoming This Month
Compiled by 15 Bytes Staff. Unless otherwise noted, UPCOMING shows begin July Gallery Stroll, July 21st. Since we will not be publishing an August edition we have also included exhibitions opening that month.

CHROMA GALLERY (1064 East 2100 South) UP: As One Door Closes, a final exhibit of works by Darryl Erdmann. In our first edition of 15 Bytes (September 2001), we wrote about the changing colors of Retro Furniture, Darryl Erdmann's Sugar House furniture store which specialized in original sixties era furniture. At the time, Retro Furniture was becoming Chroma Gallery, an exhibition space for work by Erdmann and related artists creating abstract art. For the past five years, the gallery has been a fixture in the Sugar House area, drawing in other galleries such as One Modern Art and Groutage Gallery. Those galleries have since closed their doors and now it is Chroma's time.
Before Erdmann closes up the shop, he will be holding a final exhibit of his works, including paintings never before shown in his 32 year career. As One Door Closes, So Opens Another opens Friday, July 21 during Gallery Stroll. As the title suggests, Erdmann is far from putting away his brushes. Stop in the gallery and ask him why he is closing and Erdmann is likely to tell you something along the lines of "to spend more time at Lagoon." The truth of the matter, though, is that Erdmann is eager to shed the administrative responsibilities of running a gallery to devote more time to his art. Erdmann's studio was formerly in the back space of the gallery (see June 2005), but since building a new home and studio he has moved his canvases, brushes, saw horses, sheets of stainless steel and stretcher bars to a more private setting and now plans on spending more time there.
This exhibit will feature a variety of styles Erdmann has exhibited over the years. Though some of his earlier work incorporated colorful still lifes of fruit executed with his signature brushwork, Erdmann has been best known as an abstract artist working in a lively, expressionistic manner based on a structure of basic intersecting geometric elements. He has pioneered a technique of painting directly on sheets of stainless steel, creating unified works in which painting and frame are one and the changing light of day is reflected in the surface of the work. Erdmann has experimented with other non-traditional support structures, including cutting out sections of the boards he frequently paints on, combining different size canvases, and adding external elements, such as branches and paintings by other artists, to his canvases. Lately, Erdmann has been creating extremely flat, minimalist works that allow the basic geometric elements he enjoys so much to do the talking instead of his brushwork. Examples of all this work will be on display during this final Chroma exhibit.
Erdmann will continue to exhibit in galleries in Salt Lake and Park City.
