What's Up and Upcoming Around the State

BOUNTIFUL
BDAC UP: The Bountiful/Davis Art Center is honoring its first decade with a major exhibition of works by significant Utah artists who exhibited at the Bountiful Art Center through the period 1974-1985. The “Reunion Exhibition” will open Friday evening, September 9, at 7 p.m with a free public reception. Many of the artists who exhibited during the first decade of operations have been invited. Known as the Bountiful Art Center through this first decade, it came into being as a partnership between the University of Utah, Bountiful City and communities in Davis County.
Under the able leadership of well-known artist Anton Rasmussen, a significant exhibition program was established that has continued for three decades. Hundreds of Utah’s premier visual artists have exhibited since 1974. Organizers of the exhibition, current BDAC Director Arley Curtz, Anton Rasmussen and former director Marilyn Coleman, have curated a significant retrospective of sixty artists from the beginning years of the Center. These artists set an impressive standard of high quality works that left an imprint on BDAC as a major community art center in Utah.
LeConte Stewart and Alvin Gittins, two giants of Utah art, were given several exhibitions at Bountiful Art Center. A mainstay annual exhibition “The LeConte Stewart Festival”, delighted visitors for many years. Other faculty members at the University of Utah also were brought into the exhibition program and included, Anton Rasmussen V. Douglas Snow, Ed Maryon, George Dibble, Robert Kleindschmidt, F. Anthony Smith, among others. Throughout the first decade artist-faculty members from other Utah universities also exhibited. Harrison Groutage from Utah State University, Dale Bryner, Weber State University and Robert Marshall, Brigham Young University and many others added to the annual offerings at BAC. Other artists from throughout Utah were regular exhibitors as well. Diane Turner, Nancy Lund, Norma Forsberg, David Merrill, Rose Ann Peterson, Merrily Kulmer, Colleen Parker and others represented Davis County. Lee Deffebach, Edith Roberson, Dan Baxter, Bonnie and Denis Phillips from Salt Lake County and many more exhibited their works. Please join many of these artists for the gala Opening Reunion reception on September 9.A gallery talk by Anton Rasmussen reflecting on the early years of the Center will also highlight the evening.

OGDEN
Eccles Community Art Center : Ogden's Eccles Community Art Center is an elegant sandstone mansion which is worth a trip on its own. The 110 year old building is located in downtown Ogden at 2580 Jefferson Ave. The street has been recently restored as an historical district from 25th to 26th St.
In addition to the mansion, a visit to the center is always worth the while because of the fine exhibitions on display. The current exhibit at the Center, "Women and Art," which occupies both the Main House and Carriage House galleries, features a wide range of art by northern Utah women artists including paintings, jewelry, ceramics, needlework, handmade paper, woodcut, stained glass, dolls, felted purses, scarves, and gourds.
Oil and acrylic painters include Roberta Glidden |0|, Debra Marin, and Meri Decaria and Robin Farr |2|. Glidden will also have some hand painted silk scarves on display. Blanch Wilson's (Ogden) woodcut prints and Andrea Stavrakakis' (SLC) etchings will also be on display.
Lovely handmade jewelry by Angelika Lakomski and Stephanie Saint-Thomas (SLC) will be available along with Lori Levinson's (SLC) stained glass jewelry boxes. Arlene Muller (Ogden) has been making and dressing dolls since she was young.
Ceramic artists featured in the exhibit are Suzanne Storer (Ogden) |1|, and Leslie Salinas (Bloomington, Idaho). Chris Losee, Laura Forsgren, and Eileen Stone will exhibit wearable art including purses and scarves. Jeni Gouchnor will provide unique gourd art, along with hand made paper art by Adele Greeleaf (Ogden.).
Members of the Needlework Guild in association with Teri Richards and TinaHerman of Shepherd's Bush in Ogden, will also be exhibiting. "Women and Art" will be installed at the Eccles Community Art Center through October 2nd.

Universe City Department of Visual Arts (2556 Washington Boulevard), 99.95 or less! plus tax. In conjunction with the First Friday Art Stroll in downtown Ogden, Universe City will feature a number of artists offering art priced under $100 with opening night Friday, September 2nd. All of the artists have been asked to provide inexpensive examples of their work to match the theme of the exhibit. For the most part, one can expect art on the light-hearted side!
About the artists: Leia Bell received a BFA from the University of Utah in 2001. She is the resident artist at the music venue Kilby Court. She routinely designs and produces collectable posters for bands and other clients. She has been featured on National Public Radio, Newsweek and other publications as well as in the book “Art of Modern Rock,” because of her work in the revival of poster art. Virgil Gabaldon is the artist in residence at 2612, a skate shop in Ogden. In addition to producing traditional art (untraditionally) he also paints original works on skateboard blanks. They sell as fast as he paints them.

Shaunna Goldberry, photographer, produces works to be framed as well as notecards. Her work includes regional landscapes as well as haunting and moody shots from her travels through the British Isles. Steve Henry teaches art at Christian Heritage School. He was the featured artist at ArtStop during August. His work will include prints and paintings.
Brock Porter, who received a BFA from Weber State University in 1998, currently works as a graphic designer for Ogden Weber Applied Technology College. He received the Mayor’s Art Award for Design in 2003. He will be exhibiting photographs and ceramics.
Gabriel Stockton, an artist and children’s book designer, will be exhibiting a humorous series of “found art” paintings, juxtaposing trite Parisian street scenes with bizarre stenciled designs.
Heather Heath-Stremme has an MFA in art from the University of Nevada in Reno. She was the featured artist in July at Universe City. She will exhibit prints and soft scultures.
Tom Szalay completed a BFA (1979) in photography with a minor in Art History at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He worked for many years as a photojournalist. He has been teaching photography and filmmaking at West High School in Salt Lake City for more than ten years. He is also an adjunct photography instructor at Weber State. He was the featured artist in August at Universe City. For more information, contact Benjamin Jennings, curator, 458-8959.
The exhibit will run through September 17th: Fridays, 5:00-8:00; Saturdays, from noon-8:00 pm. Private appointments to view the exhibit individually or as a group tour can be made by calling 458-8959.
