Mary Brooks
VISAGE SALON (2006 S. 900 E., 860-4333) UP:Pages from a Journal by Mary Brooks. About this exhibit, the artist says, “Many people keep a journal in a book penned with ink in chronological order. So do I, mine is made with a wide variety of materials, my inks range from pastels to pigments in resin, my paper is almost anything, rather than words I use color and shape to document my life because I cannot find words to express: rage and romantic inclinations - the outlook of religion and politics - my empathetic views of crucified musicians - the tragedy of incest and battered women - a whimsical flight of fancy or the simple sunset after a day of sailing on our Great Salt Lake.”

“Each piece is as individual as the event or individual it represents. I approach each piece a different way. At times I feel so emotional about an idea I need to feel it with both hands using materials from plaster to fiberglass. Other times painting from a distance. Each piece takes me on a new adventure where I feel the need to document that day in permanent record with a technique I may not have experienced before.”

“This exhibit is an assemblage of twelve pages torn from a six year journal.”
