AoU News: Fall Fundraiser ! ! !
Artists of Utah will be holding its annual Fall Fundraiser during the
month of October. These fundraisers are extremely important because grant
money to fund non-profit organizations like Artists of Utah are oftentimes
based on the amount of public support given the organization in terms
of personal contributions.

As part of our fundraiser we will once again hold our "Shoot Your Artwork"
session and our "How to Build Your Own Website" workshop as well as other
events to be announced. To make sure you receive notices about these
activities, be sure to
sign our guestbook.
15 Bytes cannot exist without your contributions. Help us start
our fundraiser off right by contributing early. We will give a free
15 Bytes T-shirt as a thank you gift for contributions of $50 or more.
For underwriting contributions of $75 or more we will offer you a banner

Art Happenings: Sugar Nites in Sugarhouse
Is Salt Lake City big enough for two gallery stroll nights?
The Sugar House Merchants Association seems to think so.
Beginning in October the Merchants Association presents Sugar
Nights in Sugar House on the First Friday of every month. Sugar
Nights are evenings of Art, Entertainment and Sweet Deals in the Sugar
House Business District. Sugar Nights are an opportunity for everyone
to discover the unique, diverse character of the Sugar House Business
District.
|
Come tour the studios of local artists at the Rockwood Studios, listen
to a local band at Sugar House Coffee, browse around the furniture and
home design shops that have made Sugar House famous, and grab a bite
to eat at one of the many restaurants in the Business District.
A Schedule of Events and coupons for Sweet Deals will be available at participating
galleries, shops and restaurants. Activities
from 6 to 11 pm.
This month in Sugar
House you can see the works of Steve Sheffield, Darryl Erdmann and Tom
Jackson at Chroma Gallery's exhibition "3." Many of the Rockwood
Studios will also be open. Both located at 1064 East 2100 South. When
you're done there, stroll (yes, you can actually stroll!) up to Sugar
Post Pottery where you'll find pottery and metalworks by Fred Conlin.
There will also be a pottery-throwing demonstration .

PROVO: As a child in Missouri, Gwen Toomalatai stayed away from art
class. She was almost halfway through BYU, majoring first in business, then
education, before she got a notion to try art -- a shift that did not please
her pragmatic father. Now, more than a decade later, light, and the hope
it implies, is the point of Toomalatai's paintings.
She paints on birch panels rather than on canvas, beginning with a white
gesso base spread with a knife. That gives the painting a textured look,
almost like a fine layer of fabric. Then she applies each color with a glaze
and sands it in places before adding the next color. By using pure color
rather than mixed colors, Toomalatai achieves a luminous effect. Light travels
through each pure pigment, hits the white base and reflects back through the
painting.
A collection of Gwen's most recent works will be on exhibit October
3rd through November 1st at Terra Nova Gallery, 41 West 300 North in Provo.
Terra Nova Gallery is open Monday through Friday 9-5
