Looking for an original gift idea? Think original art. All around Utah, you'll find that the Holidays are the perfect time to purchase artwork, whether for a loved-one or for yourself. Many galleries hold group exhibits featuring a number of artists and works at extremely reasonable prices.

The Salt Lake Gallery Association holds a special gallery stroll in December, the first Friday of the month, December 5th. From 6 to 9 pm you'll be able to visit local galleries late for your Holiday shopping. And ask the galleries about their sponsorship program, and you'll find out about local area restaurants that offer specials for Gallery Stroll.

But if you're eager to do your shopping, you don't have to wait until the 5th. Most galleries will be open Thanksgiving weekend so that you can get your Holiday Shopping done early.

HORNE FINE ART:
You'll find a number of talented artists during the gallery's holiday group show. Be sure to check out recent University of Utah graduate R. Aaron Lifferth. Gallery owner Karen Horne says of Lifferth: "His brushwork is so evocative, he transforms everyday still life material - fruit, vegies, and crockery into pure poetry. I love his 'edges' -- which range from knife-sharp to whisper soft." Also take a look at the pop-realism of Nathan Barnes.

PHILLIPS GALLERY: Annual Holiday Group Show allows many of the lesser known of the gallery's eighty artists to have a chance to catch your eye. Works in all media: photography, watercolor, woodcuts, jewelry, lithographs, sculpture, collage, monotypes, etchings, oils, acrylics, etc. Take a look and tell us who you think is an emerging artist who deserves attention.

MAGPIE'S NEST: The Magpie Gallery celebrates its 4th annual Holiday Show with a number of local artists, including David Estes, Heather Barron, Cassandria Parsons and Chelsea Bentley. When you visit, be sure to take a look at the work of Zachary Proctor, a young artist, instructor and activist. Proctor volunteered for four years as an instructor at an elementary school and undertook an art project with 400 children in Africa. He currently works with sexually abused children, helping them to heal through the creative process. He is currently apprenticing with David Dornan. Take a look at what he's learned.

A GALLERY: As always, you'll find a number of fabulous Utah artists at this Holladay gallery. Featured this month is the work of Gregory Stocks, Brandon Cook, Jennifer Rasmusson, Chris Thornock and others. Be sure to take a look at the work of new University of Utah art professor John O'Connell, who is now showing with the gallery. An interview with O'Connell will be appearing in the February edition of 15 Bytes.

DAVE ERICSON FINE ART: Along with his normal cadre of artists, Ericson will be featuring new works on paper by nationally recognized artist Brian Kershisnik.

NEW VISIONS GALLERY: "It's Only Paint After All," mixed media paintings by Kent Rigby. Read the 15 Bytes article.

UTAH ARTIST HANDS: You have probably seen Blaine Stonebraker as you drive past Liberty Park - he has become known as "that Liberty Park artist." Blaine has always been an artist - but the financial pressures of raising a family made it hard to survive on his art alone. So, few years ago, with his family grown, he left the more traditional work-a-day world and has picked up his paint brushes for good. You can find him set up all year long - either at the Downtown Farmer's Market; in the park or out on the street. When Pam O'Mara saw a small painting Blaine did of one of his grand kids she asked him if he could do an entire show around children. See the result -- "Childhood Snapshots" -- at UTah Artist Hands until mid January.

OUTSIDE SALT LAKE:

PROVO: Terra Nova Gallery will be presenting an exhibit of recent works by Brett Larsen Dec. 3-24 with an artist reception Friday, Dec. 5th from 6-8pm. In his current work Larsen has been interested in the concept of Paradise and the long for it that seems to have found its way into the minds of so many over time. Art has always fascinated Larsen because of its power to influence mood and alter perception. "A beautiful painting can open our eyes to the world, reminding us that it too has been composed and does influence us," explains Larsen. "It allows us to see with the eyes of a child."

BOUNTIFUL:  The Bountiful/Davis Art Center presents work by 100 Utah artists in its annual Holiday Show and Sale which runs until December 23rd.  All of the artwork is priced under $500, and patrons can take work as soon as they purchase it. Artwork is replenished as it is sold so there is always something new to see.

Every Friday night for the first three weeks in December local area businesses will be open late with fantastic art, live music and great deals at area businesses. Get to 2100 South and 11th East and go in any direction and you'll find something happening.
