Andy Warhol, the famous pop artist, once made a comment that everyone is entitled to their fifteen minutes of fame. We are trying to give artists, art professionals and art lovers in Utah their 15 bytes of fame by publishing our ezine every six weeks. So now you know. Get out there, don the shirt and don't be afraid to get into a conversation when someone stares at your chest!)

Gallery Stroll Preview
What's Up: Salt Lake and Beyond

August is often seen as a month off for Utah's art world, unless you're visiting the Park City or Helper Arts Festivals. Many galleries don't even bother to hold shows and others even close their doors completely.

But not so this year! Don't be fooled, there is already a lot to see across Salt Lake City and throughout the state. And the SLCGA will hold Gallery Stroll on Friday August 15th from 6 to 9 pm.  You might even find some interesting things outside the Gallery Stroll's beaten path.

HOLLY MAE PENDERGAST : Chroma Gallery is currently featuring new works by Holly Mae Pendergast, who was featured in the March 2003 edition of 15 Bytes . The Sugar House Gallery, currently has a number of new figurative works, both on paper and on panel.  Marvelously warm depictions of friends and strangers by this talented young artist.

TEXTILES AT MAGPIES: The Magpie's Nest Gallery will be holding a unique Group Show this month, centered around textiles. Mark Dicosola, one of the participating artists, uses the embroidery machine from his day job to create figurative works on fabric. Also exhibiting: Nancy Raybould and Eric Jensen.

HEATHER BARRON:
When looking for art in Salt Lake City, don't forget the City Library System, which hosts exhibitions in each of its branches. At the Sprague Branch in Sugar House you'll find the work of Heather Barron. In addition to the small, hand-tinted photo emulsions she is best known for, Barron is exhibiting some large canvas paintings. Her thinly painted scenes of Madonnas, angels and family are reminiscent of Brian Kershisnik. Don't forget that since its remodeling, the Sprague branch's exhibition space is now downstairs in the back.

SHAWN ROSSITER  TUSCANY & VENICE:
The Halles Gallery (Richardson, Quann Associates) will be featuring works by Salt Lake City artist Shawn Rossiter through October. Rossiter has been travelling to Italy for extended painting sessions for the past four years and this show will feature landscapes from Tuscany, as well as scenes from Venice and the Veneto. Reception August 15th, 6 to 9 pm. 814 East 100 South, SLC.

WHITNEY LEARY
: Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. Because it is not a commercial gallery, shows at the Rose can often be overlooked but don't make that mistake with this exhibition. Leary, who appeared in AoU's 35 x 35, creates works that are explorations of texture, color and design. To achieve this he uses styrofoam and paint. The results are sometimes large totempolesque sculptures, or wall pieces which shift between paintings and sculpture. A must see. The gallery is open during regular business hours, 9 to 5.

BRANDON COOK : You've still got a week to check out the works of Ogden landscape painter Brandon Cook at the A gallery . Come Gallery Stroll, the gallery will feature the work of RICK GRAHAM, who is well known for his figurative work but will also be dislplaying landscape work. The artist will be giving a demonstration during Gallery Stroll.

OUTSIDE SALT LAKE:

STREETFEST & BDAC: You can catch them in the street or inside and beat the heat. The BDAC is featuring a group exhibit with a number of artists, including: Rob Adamson, Roger Cushing, Barbara Dowdle, Kindra Fehr, Susan Gallacher, Glen Hawkins, Lester B. Lee, Rebecca Lee, Sherry Meidell, Anne Marie Oborn, Colleen Parker, Susan Plouzek, Sandra Rast, Andrea Stavrakakis, Larry Wade, Linda Dalton Walker, and Yevgeniy Zolotsev.  These artists and others will be painting on Bountiful's Main Street on Wednesday, August 13 as the Artists in Action at Streetfest!

JIM JONES: With the exhibition "Within My View" The St. George Museum of art presents around fifty paintings from collections across the state. The exhibition concentrates on works from Southern Utah and the Grand Canyon, an area Jones has painted for years. The exhibition opens this Friday, August 8th with a reception from 6 to 9 pm and runs through October 17th.
